"As
musicians become aware of and tune into higher and finer vibrations,
music becomes a powerful tool for the evolution and transformation
of our individual consciousness of the planet,” -wrote Joanne
Crandall in her book “Self Transformation through Music.”
Rusty
Crutcher is one of those aware musicians. His blend of music
and natural sounds from the Inca stronghold of Machu Picchu is
an example of awareness of the power of certain areas considered
sacred by people attuned to the energy of a place. Crutcher recorded
early in the morning and again at nightfall in the Andes with
a number of Quechua Indian flute players. He captures both the
sound and the spirit of the place and then reworks his own composition
into a harmonious whole. His
work reminds me of a verse from “The Chant of the Universe” written
for the 1993 World Parliament of Religions in Chicago: "Together
we labor to preserve the earth, our living home, and
all the delicate intermingling channels of life: the air and
soil and the water, all are our single sphere of life...Spirit
affirms, the breath of life praises, the teaching lives: Our
way together is the way of life. "An
exceptional work which merits being widely known.

"Beautiful,
softly echoed melodies, created on synthesizer, are painted over
a background of natural sounds in this gorgeous recording. 'Mama
Tierra' is warm and beautiful, and exquisitely peaceful. This
music is deeply moving, invoking the grand, awesome power of the
physical world, and its sacredness."

"Every
time I return to Machu Picchu it is clear that you have captured
a very special part and feeling of its magic. The music calls
to something ancient in me - it's hard to explain, but it reminds
me of what is real and of value in my life and in the world around
me... the music and sounds float in my head, spontaneously soothing
and comforting, as if to say, 'Remember... remember... Listening
to this tape always takes me back to a very primeval place inside
myself; before life, before "time", when there was nothing
but the earth and her energy.... "Machu Picchu Impressions"
is now, and will always remain, one of my most cherished musical
journeys."
